Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen has questioned João Pinheiro’s handling of the Bayern Munich v Paris Saint-Germain clash, with the officiating triggering strong controversy in Germany.
Bayern players were angered by several calls during the game, notably an incident involving Nuno Mendes and an alleged penalty by João Neves. After the final whistle, Dreesen voiced the club’s displeasure, telling Sky in Germany he found it surprising that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances had been assigned to a match of this magnitude, suggesting this might explain some decisions.
The match sent João Neves and Gonçalo Ramos through to the Champions League final.
Dreesen’s remarks quickly drew widespread reaction on social media and across the international press.
Pinheiro was again under the spotlight following another European performance that drew heavy criticism.
