It has been a few months since Thomas Muller put an end to his storied spell at Bayern Munich and joined MLS outside Vancouver Whitecaps.

The attacker is celebrated as one of the most impactful players in German football over the past couple of decades, having racked up 250 goals and 276 assists in 756 competitive matches for Bayern Munich.

During his time in Bavaria, Muller also won 13 Bundesliga titles, two Champions League titles and was part of the German team that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

While Muller did move to MLS after his spell in Bavaria, the attacker has recently admitted that there was a time when he did consider a move to Barcelona.

Thomas Muller considered a move to Barcelona

In a recent interview with Blickpunkt Sport (h/t SPORT), Muller revealed that shortly after his exit from Bayern Munich, he had imagined a future at Barcelona, alongside his former teammate Robert Lewandowski.

“I could have imagined a future in Barcelona,” Muller said, adding that he would have strongly considered a move if Hansi Flick had given him a call.

“If Hansi Flick, who knows me very well, had called me and I had liked the project in Barcelona, I could have imagined something like this,” he added.

The German legend went on to heap praise on Barcelona even though he hasn’t had the best of relationships with the Cules during the course of his career.

FC Barcelona are a top club. People know what they expect of you,” he added.

However, Muller ultimately settled for a move to Vancouver Whitecaps, where he is now once again an adversary of his former Dortmund rival, Marco Reus, who plays for LA Galaxy.

Muller’s potential move to Camp Nou could have been the return of the iconic partnership between him and Lewandowski, which had dominated the Bundesliga in the previous decade.

But at 36, Muller is already in the twilight of his career and has not been able to maintain the same level of fitness and performance as his former teammate. Therefore, a move to Barcelona was never on the table.

What will be interesting to see, however, is whether or not Lewandowski joins Muller in the MLS, now that he could be playing his last season at Barcelona.
