FC Barcelona had a clear surplus of centre-backs in their ranks this summer, and there are some changes expected in this area of the Catalan team in the next summer transfer window.
In addition to the departure of one or two central defenders, the Blaugrana team can also incorporate another new player, as they have been closely linked with the German centre-back Jonathan Tah for the last several months.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender once again reiterated his decision to leave the German side at the end of this season recently, confirming that he will be playing for a new side next season.
However, this new side is not guaranteed to be Barcelona, as Bayern Munich are also interested in him and will do their best to keep him playing in the Bundesliga even after leaving Leverkusen.
To further make up their mind to keep pursuing the German defender, one of the legends of the Bavarian team, Lothar Matthaus, advised his former club to get the defender.
As SPORT has reported, Matthaus was sure that Tah could help Bayern a lot:
“Bayern made a mistake last summer by not signing Tah. But maybe this time he’ll decide to play in Munich. There’s a lot of uncertainty in defense and Tah would be a big help.”
Further commenting on this matter, the former German midfielder also highlighted how Tah can help bring the best out of another current Bayern centre-back:
“Bayern isn’t happy with Kim, although I rate him as a centre-back. But maybe he needs a leader next to him. Tah would be one of those. If I had to advise FC Bayern, I’d say they need the best — and Tah is one of the best. I’d definitely negotiate for Tah.”
There is no doubt that at 29 years of age, Tah is at a stage of his career when he can help improve almost any defence in Europe with his experience and skills. Barcelona remain keenly interested in the defender, but will have to part ways with one of their current centre-backs, most likely Andreas Christensen, to sign him, while also competing with Bayern Munich for his signature.
