Bayern Munich starlet Lennart Karl delivered a shocking statement recently by openly admitting that his dream club is Real Madrid and that he wishes to defend their crest in the future.
While the statement in itself is not controversial, given how it is the dream of almost every football player, it is the open manner in which he said it when contractually bound to Bayern Munich that has set off a reaction from the fans.
The player has faced severe backlash over the past 24 hours, with a section of the Bavarian fanbase even calling for his departure and disconnecting him immediately from the club’s future plans, as they saw his statement to be one of betrayal.
Writing on Sky Sport in a recent interview, German legend and former Bayern Munich player Lothar Matthaus defended Karl for his statement, saying,
“I think it’s great when someone has self-confidence even at 17.
“Setting goals has absolutely nothing to do with arrogance. I find it honest, but not pretentious or arrogant.
“Real Madrid simply has that kind of mystique. Bayern Munich is in a similar position, but often you want to try something new in life,” he added.

He then went on to make a massive revelation that he, too, dreamt of playing for Real Madrid in his days as a professional player and then added why it never worked out.
“I, too, would have loved to play for Real Madrid. I was named World Player of the Year in 1990/91, and suddenly Real Madrid were knocking on my door,” he began.
“I would have loved to go, but I still had a contract. That’s why the transfer didn’t work out back then,” he added.
On Inter Milan standing firm against his move, he said,
“Real and I had an agreement, but Inter didn’t want to let me go for a high transfer fee.”
“I, too, had dreams: I always said that I wanted to play for a big club, become a national team player, and be part of the World Cup squad.
“At some point, dreams just get bigger,” he concluded.
