Bayern Munich are prioritizing contract extensions of several players during the winter transfer window. They want to extend the contract renewals of players who will be part of the squad on a long-term basis. However, veteran players in the squad have also entered the final months of current deals.
Die Roten have already reached an agreement to extend the contracts of Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich by a year. Both goalkeepers will play a crucial role on the pitch for Bayern next season. Bayern have also made their stance clear about the future of Thomas Muller, who has entered the final six months of the current deal.
According to Sky Sports in Germany, Bayern are open to offering a new deal to Muller. However, they want the experienced forward to take a pay cut. Muller is yet to make a decision on his future amidst suggestions of retiring at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old didn’t give anything away about his plans beyond this future when he was quizzed by media on Tuesday after Bayern’s win against RB Salzburg in a friendly game. Muller is content with life in Munich, but there is still no clarity on what he wants beyond this season.
While negotiating a new deal with Bayern last season, Muller admitted that he wanted to play at the top level at least until 2025. He will certainly achieve that objective. The German forward has a reduced role in the squad, but he still chips in vital contributions whenever he comes off the bench.
Muller is every coach’s dream player to have in the squad. He provides tactical flexibility in the attack by playing multiple positions. Moreover, he acts as a coach on the pitch, guiding players when the team is going through difficult moments.
The 35-year-old is a massive presence in the dressing room at Bayern. His fitness levels are incredible. The German forward still works tirelessly off the ball whenever he is on the pitch. Even though retirement will be a concrete option for Muller at the end of the season, there is still a lot of football left in him. He can certainly play at least one more season for Die Roten and make sizeable contributions on the pitch. Bayern and Vincent Kompany will be more than happy to accommodate him in the squad for next season.
