Manchester City have been dealt a potential blow in their future transfer pursuit of Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala.

The 21-year-old has emerged as a long-term transfer target for Manchester City, with Etihad bosses facing an imminent dilemma surrounding midfield pair Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, who are out of contract in east Manchester next summer.

Gundogan, who dramatically re-signed from FC Barcelona on a free transfer last month, has the option to automatically trigger a 12-month extension, however De Bruyne is set for crunch talks ahead of the 2025 contract expiry date.

The Belgian midfielder is the most senior member of the Manchester City first-team squad, having signed for the Sky Blues in 2015, prior to the arrival of Pep Guardiola from Bayern Munich in 2016.

De Bruyne has started all three of the Blues’ Premier League matches so far this season, and rejected a possible big-money move to Saudi Arabia during the summer, despite being the subject of a mouthwatering contract offer.

Manchester City could be set for major additions ahead of the 2025/26 season, with the possibility for Guardiola to leave at the end of the current campaign, and following a quiet summer of business at the Etihad Stadium this year.

Gundogan and Savinho were the Blues’ only first-team signings despite links with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz and Eberechi Eze.

Musiala, who is out of contract with Bayern Munich in 2026, has been linked with a possible exit from the Allianz Arena in 2025, despite starring for Germany at the European Championships and registering 20 direct goal involvements last season.

The 21-year-old scored 12 goals and registered eight assists for Bayern Munich during the 2023/24 season, and has 75 direct goal involvements in 166 appearances for the German heavyweights.

Any Manchester City pursuit for the midfielder could be impacted by Bayern Munich’s plans to retain the 2003-born star however, as Bayern’s president rejected talk of a potential exit.

“We want to try everything to keep him as long as possible. He could stay here for the next 20 years. In my opinion, he could become the second Thomas Müller,” said Herbert Hainer.
