Speaking at a Prime Video footballing roundtable on Friday, it was famed German footballing figure and pundit Matthias Sammer’s turn to offer up his thoughts on the Max Eberl situation. Bayern Munich’s current board-member-for sport has been placed in an awkward position by the man who once held his position. Eberl found himself floundering at a Bundesliga press conference yesterday in response to comments from Uli Hoeneß last weekend that he was “too sensitive”.
“I would like to see Max being left in peace a little more and not having all the media and experts constantly harping on about this topic,” Sammer began before addressing the other side of the issue. “Uli will always be an important part of FC Bayern. He will always say what he thinks. He wears his heart on his sleeve. Max tries his best, but often lets things get to him too much. I’ve sometimes thought that he [Eberl ]should be allowed to growl, scratch, or bite back.”
Regarding the speculation that Bayern might be lining up Eintracht Frankfurt board-member-for-sport Markus Krösche as Eberl’s replacement, Sammer emphasized that such rumors remained hurtful for all parties involved. Talk of Krösche moving to the Säbener Straße would constitute quite the sensational story, though Hoeneß has specifically denied them.
“There’s always speculation,” Sammer said. “Speculation fuels the footballing business. It’s all in the game. But it’s unpleasant for Markus Krösche, for Max Eberl, and for FC Bayern. One shouldn’t take it too seriously.“
