Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen square up in the Champions League’s Round of 16 this evening.
The German giants collide in Europe for the first time at the Allianz Arena. Having battled for Bundesliga supremacy over the last two seasons, their continental clash is the latest chapter in a fascinating rivalry.
Bayern lead the title race this season, having seen Leverkusen dethrone them in 2023/24. The latter won a maiden Bundesliga title last season, achieving Germany’s first-ever unbeaten top-flight campaign in the process.
Bayern boast an eight-point lead over the champions domestically, though Leverkusen have performed better in Europe. Tonight’s visitors secured automatic progress to the Round of 16, with Bayern forced to navigate a nervy play-off tie with Celtic.
Leverkusen are also unbeaten in the three previous meetings between the teams this season.
Vincent Kompany is expected to have Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies available for tonight’s clash despite an absence from training last week.
Davies heads into the game after ending speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract at the Allianz Arena. Elsewhere, Joao Palhinha and Jamal Musiala are also set to be available despite nursing knocks, while Aleksandar Pavlovic and Eric Dier are ready to return from illness.
Josip Stanisic could line up against the side he won the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal with, having spent last season on loan at Leverkusen.
Bayern predicted XI: Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Min-jae, Davies; Palhinha, Goretzka, Musiala; Olise, Coman, Kane.
Bayern Munich host Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie on Wednesday 5th March 2025. Kick-off in Munich is 20:00 GMT.
The Bayern Munich v Bayer Leverkusen game will be shown live on TNT Sports 2 in the UK.
