Bayern Munich and Real Madrid is a fixture littered in European history. No match has been played more times in the Champions League than the European Clásico between the behemoths of Germany and Spain.
Tonight the giants collide again in the Champions League quarter-finals, with Bayern in pole position to progress. Ahead of their latest encounter, we’ve remembered five memorable past meetings.
Real Madrid ended Bayern Munich’s defence of the Champions League in 2001/02, with a stirring second-leg comeback at the Bernabeu.
Late goals from Stefan Effenberg and Claudio Pizarro had seen Bayern come from behind to claim a 2-1 win in the first leg, but the Galacticos of Real Madrid had too much in the return. Iván Helguera opened the scoring to put the Spaniards ahead in the tie on away goals, before Guti’s goal five minutes from time sealed progress.
Real went on to be crowned European champions after beating another German side, Bayer Leverkusen, in the final.
Roy Makaay scored the fastest goal in Champions League history to help Bayern Munich overturn a first-leg deficit and beat Real Madrid in 2007.
The Dutchman took just 10 seconds to open the scoring as Bayern blitzed their visitors early.
A thrilling first leg had ended 3-2 in Real Madrid’s favour, but Makaay’s quick-fire goal made it advantage Bayern within seconds of the return. Lucio’s header doubled the lead, but Real set up a tense finish after Ruud van Nistelrooy’s penalty.
The penalty incident saw both teams reduced to 10 men as tempers flared, while Real were denied an aggregate winner when Sergio Ramos’ goal was disallowed for handball.
A gripping Champions League semi-final went all the way to penalties in 2012.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s early double turned the tie around for Real Madrid, who had lost 2-1 in Munich in the first leg, but a penalty from former Real winger Arjen Robben levelled the aggregate score before half-time.
Unable to be separated over two legs and extra time, penalties decided the outcome, with Manuel Neuer the hero. The German goalkeeper saved from Ronaldo and Kaka, though Iker Casillas almost rescued Real after stops from Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm.
However, Sergio Ramos blazed his effort over, allowing Bastian Schweinsteiger to send Bayern into the final.
There’s not often much in clashes between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, but the Spaniards produced a ruthless performance to eliminate the then-holders in 2014.
The tie was evenly poised after a narrow Real Madrid win (1-0) in Spain, but Los Blancos battered Bayern in a remarkable return. Sergio Ramos scored two headers from set-pieces before Cristiano Ronaldo added a third on the counter-attack to kill the tie.
Ronaldo’s free-kick made it four for Real Madrid, sealing the club’s place in the Champions League final for the first time in 12 years. It remains the biggest ever scoreline in clashes between the teams.
Real Madrid reached yet another Champions League final after a dramatic defeat of Bayern Munich in 2024.
The German giants had looked on course for the final after Alphonso Davies fired the visitors in front at the Bernabeu.
However, with just minutes remaining, an unlikely hero emerged. Joselu stabbed in an 88th-minute equaliser as the veteran forward pounced on an error from Manuel Neuer.
Moments later, the former Stoke City striker had a second. Joselu steered in from Antonio Rudiger’s pass and, while the goal was initially disallowed, VAR confirmed the Spaniard was onside to spark wild celebrations.
