Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen lock horns at the Allianz Arena on Friday night in what promises to be a fascinating Bundesliga encounter.
Both sides will be looking to achieve different objectives, with Bayern aiming to extend their perfect start to the season while Werder Bremen seek to cause an upset in Bavaria.
Bayern Munich could field their strongest XI after Vincent Kompany’s side maintained their perfect record with a 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim. The Bavarians have been in scintillating form, scoring a record-breaking 18 goals in their opening four Bundesliga matches.
Reports in German media suggest that Kim Min-jae is available to start after overcoming a minor calf issue that saw him substituted against Hoffenheim. The South Korean defender had an outstanding performance in his first start of the season and will likely partner Jonathan Tah in central defence.
Josip Stanišić remains sidelined with a medial ligament injury in his right knee, while Jamal Musiala (ankle), Alphonso Davies (knee), and Hiroki Ito continue their recovery from long-term injuries. Jonas Urbig is ahead of schedule in his return from an adductor problem and could be available for the upcoming Eintracht Frankfurt match.
Raphaël Guerreiro is back in the squad after overcoming an abdominal issue. Kompany is expected to rotate minimally given the four-day gap to their next Champions League fixture against Pafos.
Werder Bremen will be without goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, who has been ruled out with a shoulder injury sustained in training, meaning back-up netminder Michael Zetterer could deputise between the posts. The Green-Whites have several injury concerns with Samuel Mbangula (thigh), Niklas Stark (thigh), Julian Malatini (ankle), Olivier Deman (ankle), Maximilian Wöber (knee), and Mitchell Weiser (knee) all unavailable.
Victor Boniface could make his first Bundesliga start for Bremen after joining on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. The Nigerian striker has yet to score in this season’s Bundesliga and may replace Marco Grüll in the starting lineup. Boniface’s arrival has been seen as a major boost for Bremen following the departure of Marvin Ducksch to Birmingham City.
Captain Marco Friedl and experienced defender Yukinari Sugawara are expected to anchor the defence under Horst Steffen’s tactical system.
Vincent Kompany’s side have been nothing short of spectacular in their opening four Bundesliga matches, boasting a 100 per cent record while scoring 18 goals. Their most recent performances include a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Hoffenheim and a dominant 5-0 thrashing of Hamburg. The Bavarians have also impressed in the Champions League, defeating Chelsea 3-1 at home.
Bayern have established a new Bundesliga record for most goals scored after four matches and have shown remarkable consistency under Kompany’s tactical guidance. Their attacking prowess has been led by the sensational form of Harry Kane, who has already netted two hat-tricks.
Bremen’s season has been characterised by inconsistency, having collected just four points from their opening four matches. After suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in their opener, they showed character with a 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Their standout performance came with a superb 4-0 away victory at Borussia Mönchengladbach, demonstrating their potential when everything clicks. However, they followed this with a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to SC Freiburg, highlighting their defensive vulnerabilities.
Despite their mixed league form, Bremen have shown they can be dangerous on their travels, having won five of their last seven Bundesliga away matches.
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Laimer, Tah, Kim, Guerreiro; Kimmich, Pavlović; Olise, Gnabry, Díaz; Kane.
Werder Bremen: Zetterer; Sugawara, Coulibaly, Friedl, Agu; Stage, Lynen; Schmid, Puertas, Njinmah; Boniface.
