Despite Upamecano’s extension, the defense remains a key issue at FC Bayern, with Emmanuel Fernandez now a new name in Munich’s focus

The 24-year-old central defender from Glasgow Rangers has played himself into the spotlight this season and is attracting attention across Europe. After his transfer from England, the Nigerian immediately established himself as a regular player in Glasgow and also gained his first international experience

As the Transferfeed portal reports, those responsible at Säbener Straße are looking into the possibility of signing Fernandez, but there are currently no concrete talks or offers

One reason for this is likely to be the asking price. Rangers are said to be demanding around 40 million euros – a sum that is currently considered high from Munich’s point of view, especially in view of his market value, which is eight million euros according to Transfermarkt

Competition from the Bundesliga and Premier League

Bayern are not alone in their interest, however. According to transfer insider Ekrem Konur, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also keeping a close eye on the central defender’s situation

There is also demand from the Premier League, with clubs such as Arsenal and West Ham also reportedly keeping an eye on Fernandez

Rangers are open to talks in principle and the club is open to sales for financial reasons

Fernandez brings an interesting overall package to the table. At 1.98 meters tall, he is a great weapon, especially with set pieces, and regularly provides a goal threat

His physical presence and heading ability make him a classic central defender with a modern approach – a profile that is in demand in top European soccer

Bayern currently has no need

However, Fernandez would face a well-stocked central defense in Munich, with Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Minjae Kim and Hiroki Ito giving Bayern several options

Nevertheless, there could be movement in the personnel planning, with Minjae Kim in particular repeatedly linked with a possible departure

At the moment, interest in Fernandez is mainly a matter of observation and no concrete steps have yet been made

What is clear, however, is that FC Bayern is keeping a close eye on the market – and Fernandez is one of the names that could become more important in the coming months
