There is something both methodical and mildly chaotic about Bayern Munich’s approach to squad evolution this summer. With Leroy Sane opting for a free transfer to Galatasaray following contract breakdowns, the Bavarian club now find themselves assessing a shortlist that reads like a who’s who of Premier League wingers.
According to CF Bayern Insider via journalist Christian Falk, Bayern are in ongoing discussions over a possible move for Gabriel Martinelli, with the Arsenal forward a long-term interest dating back to Thomas Tuchel’s reign. Falk reports: “There is said to have been contact with Gabriel Martinelli’s management. The 24-year-old, whose contract expires in 2027, has a market value of €55m [£47.1m].”

While Martinelli remains a central focus, Bayern are casting a wider net. Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are also under consideration. Falk notes that Bayern’s interest in Diaz has re-emerged after Real Madrid’s Rodrygo was taken off the market. “Previously, Diaz had actually already reached a preliminary agreement with Los Blancos. Now, Bayern are suddenly in the game.”
Diaz, who registered 17 goals and eight assists in the 2024/25 season, appears the most statistically convincing of the trio. His flair, explosiveness and improved finishing have been key components of Liverpool’s transitional season under Arne Slot. However, the club are reportedly open to selling Diaz, provided a suitable replacement can be secured.

Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon remains on Liverpool’s radar, though no deal is imminent. In contrast, Gakpo’s situation is less defined, with no clear indications from Liverpool that they are actively seeking his exit.
Martinelli, in theory, is the most settled of the three targets. But Falk’s report raises questions about how secure that status truly is. Despite a contract until 2027, Arsenal’s interest in Nico Williams suggests they are at least contemplating future alternatives out wide.

Barcelona are understood to be leading the race for Williams, which complicates Arsenal’s forward planning. If Martinelli fails to agree an extension in the coming season, Arsenal may be forced to reassess their long-term left-wing options, especially if Bayern are willing to act before that uncertainty crystallises.

What links all three of Bayern’s targets — Martinelli, Diaz and Gakpo — is a type: fast, direct, flexible in positioning. But beyond the profiles, there is the more subtle reality of leverage. Bayern can offer Champions League football, elite wages, and for players like Diaz or Gakpo who are navigating crowded squads, perhaps a clearer route to status and starts.
The idea of Martinelli being sold to Bayern Munich — even with years left on his contract — will be concerning for Arsenal fans. This is a player who embodies the energy of Arteta’s project. He presses relentlessly, drives forward fearlessly, and connects well with the fanbase. You don’t casually lose players like that unless something behind the scenes is off.
The real issue here is the club’s lack of urgency. If Martinelli has not signed a new deal soon, the leverage shifts away from Arsenal. Bayern have a long history of being opportunistic in the market. They move when there’s blood in the water. We’ve seen it with Götze, with Lewandowski, with countless others. If Martinelli feels he’s not being prioritised or if the club are chasing shiny new signings like Nico Williams, it creates doubt.
And in truth, his numbers have dipped slightly. Ten goals and six assists is decent but not dazzling. It’s the kind of return that gives clubs just enough pause to consider alternatives — and gives agents just enough room to explore options.
Let’s be clear: if Arsenal are serious about competing at the top, they don’t sell Martinelli now. They extend his deal, they back him, and they ensure that Bayern’s shortlist stays just that — a list, not a raid.
