Bayern too dominant? Eberl is annoyed by the Bundesliga debate

Max Eberl is remarkably calm in the face of current discussions about a salary cap or structural interventions in the Bundesliga. After FC Bayern’s 2-0 win against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the sporting director explained in the Mixed Zone how he sees the debate that has flared up again – and why he is not letting it put him off

No sooner has FC Bayern returned to the top nationally than voices calling for reforms are raised. Salary cap, play-offs, new competition formats – the discussions are similar, the timing is striking. For Max Eberl, this is no coincidence, but a familiar pattern. His reaction is correspondingly sober. „It really does rebound, because a year and a half ago I didn’t hear any salary cap when Leverkusen and Stuttgart were ahead of us,“ the 52-year-old clarified

For Eberl, this shows a certain short-sightedness in the public debate. Success at FC Bayern is often taken for granted, while the work behind it is ignored. „Now, a year and a half later, we’ve done a good job, we’re all doing very, very well, we’re highly deserving, even in the Bundesliga,“ Eberl continued, adding unequivocally: „But none of this is a given.“

It is precisely the supposedly „easy“ games that are regularly underestimated. Eberl knows from his own experience how much an opponent has to invest in order to stand up to FC Bayern. „You have to invest an incredible amount to play against FC Bayern,“ he emphasised. This is precisely where the difference lies: while Munich have the quality to decide games late on, falling behind can quickly end in a clear defeat for other teams

No victim role at FC Bayern

Despite the recurring criticism, the German record champions by no means see themselves as unfairly treated victims. „I don’t feel unfairly treated. We are simply doing a good job,“ he made clear. For the sporting director, this is no reason for complacency, but rather motivation

Looking back serves as a reminder: „A year and a half ago, what I said really got a lot of scorn and ridicule, that we only came third and weren’t even allowed to play in the Super Cup,“ Eberl recalled. It was precisely this phase that triggered processes within the club that are now bearing fruit. Decisions have been questioned, structures have been sharpened and cohesion within the club has been strengthened

„This is always an incentive for FC Bayern to make really good decisions, to try to grow together again as a team, to grow together again as a club,“ explained Eberl. For him, the current dominance is not a reason for structural interventions from outside, but the result of internal development

In the end, the sporting director draws a clear conclusion that is emblematic of how Munich sees itself: „This also shows the strength we have as FC Bayern.“ A statement that can be understood not only as a response to salary cap demands, but also as a fundamental attitude. FC Bayern does not want to be slowed down – it wants to continue to work for its own advantage.
