Bayern Munich Forced to Ditch Red Kit Ahead of Celtic Showdown in Champions League…

Bayern Munich will be forced to wear an alternative kit when they visit Celtic Park this Wednesday for the first leg of their Champions League knockout play-off, a significant departure from their usual European tradition.

UEFA’s Kit Ruling and Bayern’s Unusual Champions League Look

UEFA has banned Bayern from wearing their famous red home kit in all 2024/25 Champions League fixtures due to the lack of contrast in the black player names and numbers on the back of the shirt. UEFA regulations require a higher contrast for visibility, and instead of modifying the font colour, Bayern have opted to wear their Adidas Originals-inspired third kit, a beige throwback jersey, in every home game so far this season.

A Change from the Last Encounter

The last time Celtic and Bayern Munich met in the 2017 Champions League group stage, both teams stayed true to their classic colours, Celtic in the iconic Hoops and Bayern in their famed red shirts for both legs. This time, however, Celtic will remain in their traditional green and white, while Bayern will once again have to step away from their famous red identity.

Celtic’s Camouflage Kit Sales Surge

Speaking of shirts, Celtic fans have been snapping up the club’s 2024/245 third kit, the so-called ‘camouflage’ jersey, following the encouraging performance against Aston Villa. The performance and attraction of the Battle of Britain clash has seemingly boosted sales of the third kit, proving that iconic European nights can turn jerseys into collector’s items.

Expected Kits for Both Legs

For Wednesday’s first leg at Celtic Park, Celtic are set to wear their traditional green and white Hoops, while Bayern will likely don their Anthracite (dark grey) second kit, as their beige Champions League jersey would clash too closely with Celtic’s home colours.

For the return leg in Munich, Bayern are almost certain to wear their beige UCL jersey, having done so in all four of their home Champions League matches this season. Celtic, meanwhile, will have to choose between their third ‘camouflage’ kit or their yellow away jersey. Given the similarity between Bayern’s beige and Celtic’s canary yellow, it’s highly likely that the Hoops will opt for their ‘camouflage’ third kit once again.

This decision could also prove beneficial for the club off the pitch. With a surge in sales following the Aston Villa victory, wearing the camouflage shirt on another big European night would only further drive revenue and demand, reinforcing its status as a potential fan-favourite and collector’s item.

Summary

So expect Harry Kane & Co to be wearing the strip shown below tomorrow night, while Bayern will wear the lighter coloured strip shown in the team group above week tonight in the Allianz Arena.  Celtic will be in the Hoops tomorrow and most probably the camouflage third strip that was showcased at Villa Park next Tuesday night in Munich.
