Iman Beney was Switzerland’s outstanding player in their 2-0 Euro 2025 victory over Iceland in Bern.

Backed by raucous support at the Wankdorf Stadium, the Swiss side were dominant and should perhaps have won by more.

While it was Geraldine Reuteler and Alayah Pilgrim who scored the goals, Beney can lay claim to being the game’s best player.

Ahead of her first season at the Joie Stadium in 2025/26, there was plenty in this display from our summer signing to get Blues excited for what’s to come.

Starting from right wing-back in Switzerland’s 3-5-2 formation, the 18-year-old’s energy and powerful running was crucial to almost every attacking move her nation put together.

Her link-up with Barcelona’s young attacker Sydney Schertenleib was the brightest spark in a first half that saw both sides struggle to play fluently.

Our new signing even thought she’d scored a Goal of the Tournament contender on the cusp of half-time, stepping on to a loose bouncing ball and unleashing a fierce shot at the top corner that narrowly missed and instead caught the outside of the net.

That came after Switzerland had the ball in the net from a Svenja Folmli header but the striker was adjudged to have unfairly knocked her opponent to the ground before rising highest.

Beney pushed even further forward in the second half, having seemingly been asked to forego most of her defensive responsibilities in search of the breakthrough.

Her direct running had the Iceland defence constantly backtracking, but it was with her head that she almost opened the scoring in the 58th minute.

Despite her diminutive stature, she leapt highest to power the ball towards goal from all of 18 yards – only to see Iceland goalkeeper Cecilia Runarsdottir get to it just in time.

All of the frustration growing in the stadium as the final whistle neared was lifted in the 75th minute when Schertenleib played in Reuteler to hammer low and hard from just inside the box.

With Iceland stretched while chasing an equaliser, a quick break in the 89th minute ended with Swiss sub Pilgrim hitting from 20 yards into the corner to seal the three points.

The result leaves Switzerland second in Group A after two games.

They have three points having lost to Norway in the tournament’s opening game and will face Finland in a winner-takes-all clash on Thursday.

We’ll have a report shortly after every game involving a City player at Euro 2025 on mancity.com and our official app.
