Benfica have requested an emergency meeting with the Portuguese Football Federation, led by Pedro Proença, seeking urgent clarification on refereeing matters. The club said in a statement that it wants full assurances over the independence of the system.

Benfica voiced concern at information made public about the departure of Duarte Gomes from the refereeing structure. It described the situation as extremely serious and warned that possible external interference could jeopardise the credibility of competitions.

The stance comes amid mounting tension around the sector, with the club reiterating demands for total transparency and responsibility. It framed the issue as fundamental to trust in Portuguese football.

It also recalled positions set out at a recent General Assembly, stressing that this season will be one of zero tolerance towards anything that threatens sporting integrity. The club will be uncompromising in defending sporting truth and will demand transparency, independence and accountability from those responsible for safeguarding Portuguese football.

Benfica will continue to monitor developments and does not rule out further institutional steps if the response falls short. It will assess the next moves once replies are received.
