Benfica face longer Europa League route after Torreense’s historic cup win | OneFootball

Torreense’s Taça de Portugal shock has lengthened Benfica’s Europa League route for 2026/27.

Torreense beat Sporting 2-1 after extra time in the Jamor final, and by lifting the trophy they go straight into the 2026/27 Europa League league phase, according to Glorioso 1904.

With the direct berth taken, Benfica miss out on the shorter path they had hoped might follow a different outcome at Jamor. They must begin in the second qualifying round, bringing pre-season forward and requiring a possible six matches to reach the league phase. Possible opponents are already known.

The result also reshapes Portugal’s European picture. Braga enter the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League, while Famalicão drop out of continental competition.

Torreense will be seeded in Pot four for the Europa League draw, with scope to rise depending on coefficient movements. Should Benfica come through all qualifiers, they should be placed in Pot one for the league phase.
