Benfica say Real Madrid must pay 15 million euros for José Mourinho if Pérez is re-elected

Benfica notified the market regulator, the CMVM, on Thursday, 4 June, that Florentino Pérez’s Real Madrid election bid has expressed an intention to hire José Mourinho as head coach, the club said in a statement.

If Pérez is re-elected president, any move would require payment of the 15 million euros release clause in Mourinho’s current contract.

The filing came a day after Pérez publicly restated his wish to work with Mourinho again, via a campaign video on official platforms that presented the coach as central to his next term project.

The Real Madrid presidential vote is scheduled for 7 June 2026.

Any agreement would hinge on Pérez winning that election and the clause being paid in full. No further details were disclosed.
