The controversy from the Benfica vs Real Madrid Champions League clash continues to grow after Gianluca Prestianni released a statement addressing the accusations made by Vinicius Jr.
The Argentine youngster, who was at the centre of the storm, has denied that he directed any racist insults at the Brazilian forward.
The incident took place shortly after Vinicius scored the opening goal in the 51st minute.
Following his celebration, the Real Madrid star approached referee Francois Letexier and reported that Prestianni had directed racist abuse towards him.
The French official immediately activated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, leading to an eight-minute stoppage as the situation was assessed.
During that period, tensions rose on the pitch. Real Madrid players gathered around the Benfica youngster, with Kylian Mbappe among the most vocal figures.
Cameras captured the French forward repeatedly confronting Prestianni and shouting, “You’re a f**king racist!”
Despite the seriousness of the accusation, the broadcast images were unable to provide clear proof of what was said.
This is because Prestianni had covered his mouth with his shirt while speaking to Vinicius, making it impossible to read his lips.

In the aftermath of the game, the Benfica player took to social media to present his version of events.
He insisted that there had been a misunderstanding and denied making any racist comments.
“I want to clarify that at no point did I direct racist insults at the player Vinicius Junior, who unfortunately misinterpreted what he thinks he heard.”
He then reinforced his stance, stressing that such behaviour is not part of his character. “I have never been racist towards anyone.”
The Argentine also revealed that the incident had consequences for him personally after the final whistle.
According to his statement, he received threats from Real Madrid players during the confrontation on the pitch.
Addressing that aspect, he said, “And I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.”
The situation now leaves UEFA with a delicate case to review. With conflicting accounts and no clear video evidence of the alleged insult, the governing body will need to decide whether any further action is necessary.
