Chelsea are reportedly facing transfer interest in midfielder Enzo Fernandez this summer, which could open up the possibility of a swap deal.

The Argentina international has mostly been a solid performer for Chelsea, but arguably hasn’t ever reached the kind of peak form we saw from him at former club Benfica.

It could be that Chelsea would be tempted to let Fernandez go for the right price, and Atletico Madrid seem keen on a potential cash-plus-player deal.

That’s according to a report from Fichajes, with the Spanish outlet stating that Atletico could try offering €30m plus Pablo Barrios to the Blues.

It remains to be seen if that would convince Chelsea to let Fernandez go, but there could be some sense in trying something different in midfield.

Could Pablo Barrios be an upgrade on Enzo Fernandez in the Chelsea midfield?

Barrios has shown himself to be a fine young talent, and CaughtOffside understands that he’s already someone on Chelsea’s radar, while Arsenal also like the player.

Still only 21 years of age, Barrios has been a regular for Atletico for the last few years, and he surely has it in him to make the step up to playing in the Premier League.

Fernandez, meanwhile, might just be better off trying life in a different league and a more settled environment than Stamford Bridge.

It’s been a difficult period for Chelsea, who have gone through a number of managerial changes and other personnel changes under this ownership.

Given that important context, it’s perhaps not too surprising that Fernandez hasn’t quite been able to show his best form.

The 24-year-old could, therefore, do well to try reviving his career with Atletico, who have shown their ability to help players make a fresh start and improve.

That’s true of both Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher, who left the Premier League for the Spanish capital last summer.
