Ipswich Town may be set to act following the update
Josh Brownhill recently announced that he has decided to leave Burnley after five years.
The 29-year-old stated via X that it was the right time for him to start his “next journey in football”, bringing an end to the continuous speculation surrounding his Turf Moor future.
Last season saw Brownhill hit new heights on a personal front, netting 18 times and providing six assists in 42 Championship appearances.
This included a brace against Sheffield United in the match that secured the Clarets’ promotion to the Premier League.
This news will have alerted a number of clubs, with sides such as West Ham United and Celtic rumoured to be interested in the midfielder’s services.
Ipswich Town were also reported to be keen on signing Brownhill earlier in the window, willing to grant the former Burnley man the big pay day he is wanting.
When it became clear earlier in the summer that Brownhill wasn’t in any rush to commit his future to Burnley, the Tractor Boys were revealed to be keeping tabs on the situation.
Now, with his Turf Moor exit officially confirmed, Kieran McKenna and Co. can act on their desire.
Ipswich are still yet to spend heavily this summer, partly due to the already competitive nature of their squad.
Liam Delap’s sale has brought in some healthy funds, some of which the Suffolk outfit could use to meet Brownhill’s wage demands.
Although the move would represent an initial downgrade for the 29-year-old, McKenna’s side should be fighting at the sharp end of the Championship next term and it might not be too long before the midfielder would operate out of the top-flight once more.
Time is of the essence, however and if clubs like West Ham United and Celtic make their interest in Brownhill concrete, it might be impossible for Ipswich to compete.
Therefore, they should strike whilst the iron is hot and hand the former Preston North End and Bristol City man a proposal immediately.
If they can meet his demands, it would allow them to steal a march on the other sides vying for Brownhill’s signature.
If Ipswich Town manage to offer Brownhill what Burnley couldn’t despite the latter’s Premier League status, it would be seriously impressive and act as a real statement of intent.
Championship clubs are finding it harder and harder as years go by to compete with the teams relegated from the top-flight due to their parachute payments.
If the Tractor Boys added one of the division’s standout performers from last term to their ranks, it would further deflate those sides who think they stand an outside chance at promotion.
With attackers such as Sammie Szmodics, Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene ahead of him, Brownhill would have a wealth of options to combine with from midfield and strike even more fear into the division’s other 23 defences.
Convincing the outgoing Burnley captain that dropping back down to the second-tier is the best move for his career will be tough, but if Ipswich get it done, they may have secured an early advantage in the race for promotion to the Premier League.
