Birmingham City have been linked with a potential move to sign attacking midfielder Adam Brennan from UCD ahead of the January transfer window.

According to Football Insider, the Championship side are among the clubs eyeing a deal for the 18-year-old following his impressive campaign in the second tier of Irish football.

The teenager scored nine goals from 28 appearances in the First Division, with the team missing out on promotion with a play-off defeat to Bray Wanderers.

However, Birmingham face competition from the likes of Hull City and Wrexham in the race to sign the youngster.

Premier League side Crystal Palace are also believed to be monitoring Brennan, with the winter market set to open next month.

When asked about a potential deal for the UCD player, FLW’s Birmingham fan pundit Jason Moore claimed that this is a move with very little risk as he could turn out great or he could be moved on quite easily in the long run as he is still only 18.

He also cited Seamus Coleman’s successful career at Everton as an example of players doing well moving over from Ireland, albeit the full-back joined in 2009, and he was competing at a Premier Division level prior to his switch to Merseyside.

“The clubs that are being linked with him, I’m more than happy to have him,” Moore told Football League World.

“Look at Everton with Seamus Coleman, he cost them peanuts and he came from the Irish league.

“He is racking those numbers up, and there’s talent there and if people think there’s going to be a player there, then go for it.

“I’m more than happy to take him.

“I’m pretty adamant we got Keith Fahey from the Irish league as well.

“So, if there’s a player there then go for him, and I think that sort of matches what we’ve been about the last couple seasons anyway.

“Finding players in these random leagues, I know we got Kyogo and Patrick Roberts and people like that, but Marvin Ducksch, that came out of nowhere, [Boubacar] Kamara came out of nowhere.

“I’d be more than happy to take him, he’s only 18 and if it goes wrong you can just get rid easy.”

Birmingham will be hoping to improve the first team squad when the January window opens, with the club setting their sights on promotion to the Premier League.

However, it’s unlikely Brennan will arrive and be capable of immediately competing in the first team squad at this stage in his career.

The Blues are currently 10th in the Championship table following their defeat away at QPR on Tuesday night.

Next up for Chris Davies’ side is a home clash against Charlton Athletic on 13 December in a 3pm kick-off.

Adam Brennan move would be one for the future

A deal for Brennan would be quite low-risk for Birmingham as the likely cost of bringing to St. Andrew’s should be relatively low.

He is also only 18, so has plenty of potential to grow and develop into a first team player, so there is a lot of possible upside to getting this deal over the line.

The Blues face a lot of competition for his signing, particularly as UCD and Hull have built a relationship between the two clubs.
