Birmingham City should look to sign Wolves' Fer Lopez this month as they try to add more creativity to Chris Davies' squad.

Birmingham City have once again been aggressive in the transfer market, as they look to back Chris Davies to deliver promotion this season.

There’s no denying that Blues have underachieved so far, but they will still believe a top six finish is possible, and the boss will have learned a lot from the first six months of the campaign.

So, January has been about rectifying the issues in the squad, and, to their credit, Birmingham acted swiftly to bring in Kai Wagner to address the lack of depth at left-back. A deal for Jhon Solis is also set to be finalised, with the Colombian set to bring more power to the midfield.

Birmingham City are lacking a creative spark in the final third

They appear to be two shrewd signings on paper, but Blues still look as though they’re lacking something in the final third, and bringing in a quality number ten should be a priority.

When Kanya Fujimoto signed in the summer, there were hopes that he could be a creative number ten to feed the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Marvin Ducksch and Jay Stansfield.

However, the former Gil Vicente man has barely had a look-in, and whilst Blues’ return of 35 goals in 26 games is decent, they still need players who can make a difference in tight games.

Whilst Davies has a lot of quality in attack, there’s only really Patrick Roberts who is capable of playing the sort of pass that can unlock a deep defence, or a bit of magic to unbalance the opposition.

Fer Lopez could flourish at Birmingham City amid Wolves exit talk

Therefore, bringing in another technical attacker should be a priority for Blues, and the solution to Davies’ problem could be found down the road at Wolves.

Fer Lopez joined Wanderers for £19m in the summer after impressing at Celta Vigo, but, so far, he has struggled to adapt to English football, and it has been suggested that he will be loaned to a Championship club in this window.

Despite his struggles, with Lopez registering just one assist in nine appearances, there’s no denying that he has plenty of talent.

The 21-year-old is supremely gifted on the ball, and he has shown in his limited time on the pitch that he can play superb passes with his left foot. Plus, he has the ability to beat his man, and he can shoot from range.

Yet, there are flaws to his game, which you would expect for someone so young. Lopez lacks the physicality to cope with the Premier League, and Wolves don’t exactly play to his strengths right now given their struggles.

It seems apparent he would benefit from playing in a team that is looking to dominate possession, which could make him ideal for Birmingham and Davies.

Blues rank sixth for possession in the Championship, so he would be linking up with a team that is much more on the front foot.

With the likes of Solis, Paik Seung-ho or Tomoki Iwata in midfield, Davies should be able to build a team that has the physical attributes to compensate for where Lopez struggles.

Then, it would be about getting him on the ball in the final third. That’s where Lopez can really hurt the opposition, and Kyogo and Stansfield, two players who are willing to run in behind and stretch the game, would really benefit from playing alongside someone with the vision of the Wolves man.

Lopez has been capped by Spain’s U21s, and he has previously trained with the senior team during international breaks, so there’s no denying this is a player with genuine quality.

Even though there is a rivalry between Blues and Wolves, there should be an understanding that this could be mutually beneficial.

Wolves will recognise that Lopez needs to be playing in the Championship ahead of their likely relegation, and he could provide the imagination that Birmingham are sometimes lacking going forward as they look to secure back-to-back promotions.
