The 20-year-old winger has only started four Championship games so far this season under Chris Davies

Liverpool could look at Lewis Koumas' situation at Birmingham City in January, which hints at a potential recall.

The Welsh winger, who joined Birmingham City on loan this past summer following a successful spell at Stoke City, has managed 18 appearances for the West Midlands outfit without providing a goal or assist.

But of those 18 games, his role has largely been trying to make an impact off the bench, as he’s only started four - which is the reason behind his potential switch back to Merseyside.

Given the fact that Koumas has been so poorly received by Bluenoses, you could imagine there would be few tears shed if his temporary deal was to be cut short.

As per a transfer report from The Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, the upcoming January transfer window presents an opportunity for Liverpool to review the loan arrangements of several players currently plying their trade elsewhere - and Koumas has been named as one.

Steele's report specifically highlighted the 20-year-old's predicament, noting that "other current loans, like Lewis Koumas at Birmingham City, could be looked at due to a lack of game time".

This suggestion indicates that Liverpool's hierarchy are prepared to pull the plug on the loan because Koumas has so often found himself confined to the sidelines at St Andrew's.

In truth, Koumas' situation probably became even more insecure from Birmingham's own perspective following his performance in their 1-1 draw with Derby County on Boxing Day.

The youngster replaced the injured Demarai Gray 15 minutes in, but his contribution was ultimately forgettable. According to FotMob data, Koumas created zero chances, failed to register a shot on goal, completed zero of his six attempted dribbles, and lost 100 percent of his ground duels.

Even when Blues manager Chris Davies opted to bring the winger off for Lyndon Dykes on the 78th minute, it was still the longest amount of game time Koumas has had since playing 54 minutes against Preston North End in October.

Given the aforementioned report specifically named Koumas, a recall in January appears increasingly likely unless there is a dramatic change in circumstances. But, if the Reds do decide to take the winger back, they would then obviously face another decision regarding his immediate future.

Most Birmingham fans would now argue that Liverpool need to find a more suitable loan arrangement for Koumas, perhaps at a club better positioned to use the talents he showed at Stoke City last season - where he scored six goals and provided three assists.

The absence of goals and assists as mentioned earlier, combined with his poor displays when given an opportunity, shows that he is simply not suited to Davies' system.

Davies previously told Birmingham Live at the start of December that he expects Koumas to play a lot more minutes over this Christmas and New Year period - but that may not be enough to stop Liverpool making their decision.
