Lewis Koumas is on Chris Davies' radar, but it's arguably that the Blues wouldn't be able to offer him the gametime he needs

A whole host of Championship clubs have registered their interest in 19-year-old Lewis Koumas, as the exciting Liverpool youngster looks set to go out on loan again in 2025/26.

Alongside the likes of Norwich City, Sheffield United and Hull City, newly promoted second-tier sides Birmingham City and Wrexham have all expressed interest in bringing Koumas to their clubs, according to a report from The Liverpool Echo.

The young winger enjoyed an overall decent first full season in senior football last year whilst on loan at Stoke City, appearing in all but one matchday squad in the Championship, starting 26 times and scoring three.

He also added another three goals in the FA and EFL Cups, including a brace in the Potters' fourth round penalty defeat to Cardiff City.

Koumas is ready to continue his development in the second tier, and Liverpool will be angling for a move to a side who will be prepared to start him week in, week out.

For that reason, though, Birmingham shouldn't be putting all their chips into bringing in the 19-year-old on loan between now and September 1st's transfer deadline.

Lack of regular game time at Birmingham City may see Liverpool look elsewhere when loaning out Lewis Koumas

As the Liverpool Echo stated, Liverpool are not lacking in suitors prepared to take Koumas on loan for the 2025/26 season, and therefore have the freedom to pick where they best see the 19-year-old developing the most.

Development will come via regular game time, and unfortunately for Birmingham, they just aren't able to give that promise.

Chris Davies has already seen one of his loan targets in a left-sided attacking role slip through his grasp due to an inability to guarantee regular Championship starts, as Tottenham Hotspur youngster Mikey Moore opted for a move to Rangers over the likes of Birmingham, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough.

The Blues have already brought in Demarai Gray to operate on the left-hand side this season. When he's not available, Birmingham has Keshi Anderson as a natural left-winger, but also, if push comes to shove, can deploy Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Jay Stansfield in that position.

Whilst the addition of Koumas would be exciting, as the Welshman has a lot of promise in the game, it's one that, from a Birmingham standpoint, would provide quality depth in the wide areas. His pace and directness would offer Davies a potentially game-changing outlet late in matches against tired defences, but it would be difficult to see Koumas becoming a regular starter.

Unfortunately, that proposition wouldn't likely interest Liverpool at all.

Birmingham City arguably don't need Lewis Koumas this season

Birmingham's transfer strategy so far this summer has been to bring in players suited to benefit them now, as they strive to secure a second straight promotion to the Premier League.

The youngest player Chris Davies has brought to the side this summer so far is James Beadle, but pre-season selection has people wondering if the Blues manager will opt for Ryan Allsop to begin the new campaign.

Tommy Doyle and Eiran Cashin, two 23-year-olds, arrive at the club either with Premier League experience, in Doyle's case, or quality Championship performances, which earned him a move to a Premier League Club, in Cashin's case. The rest of the new arrivals come either at peak age or are entering peak age in a year or so.

So far, the players who have been brought in at Birmingham have arrived with the view to impact the squad immediately and handle a promotion challenge, and whilst Koumas definitely has the potential to, one season at a struggling Stoke side doesn't exactly scream 'win-now.'

And whilst the Liverpool youngster would be a coup for any side in the Championship, it will probably be those who currently bolster a weaker squad who are willing to offer Koumas the gametime he wants this season.
