Black Stars seal fifth World Cup appearance with narrow win in Accra as Kudus shines again
Black Stars Back! Otto Addo Leads Ghana to 2026 World Cup
The Ghana national team booked their place at the 2026 FIFA World cup after hard fought 1 - 0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mohammed Kudus scored the only goal of the match in the 47 minute converting precise low cross from Thomas Partey.
The goal sent the home fans into celebration as Ghana clinched top spot in Group I of the African qualifiers.
Ghana finished the campaign with 25 point, 6 clear of Madagascar who fell 4 - 1 to Mali in Bamako. This result confirmed Ghana’s dominance in the group and sealed their ticket to North America 2026.
This qualification marks Ghana’s 5th World cup appearance after previous participations in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022.
The Black Stars most memorable run came in 2010 when they reached the quarter finals before bowing out to Uruguay in dramatic penalty shootout.
The qualification comes as relief following difficult period for Ghanaian football which included group stage exit from the 2024 Africa cup of Nations and poor run in subsequent qualifiers.
Coach Otto Addo who replaced Chris Hughton earlier this year guided Ghana through steady recovery.
Despite earlier struggles, his team found rhythm when it mattered most finishing the qualifiers with 8 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat (the only loss coming against Comoros in Nov 2023).
Africa’s 5th Representative
Ghana joins Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia as the 5 African teams to have already secured their spots at the 2026 World Cup with 4 places still to be decided.
