Black Stars Strategy: Schaefer Pushes Balance Between Europe and Local Talent
Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schaefer's praised Ghana’s local based goalkeeper Benjamin Asare describing him as true inspiration for homegrown talent & the national team’s future.
Speaking after Ghana’s recent international fixture, the German tactician stressed that national team selection shouldn't be limited to Europe based stars.
"We've many top players in Europe but our goalkeeper's local and was fantastic on Monday, I want to visit the clubs and use him as role model. All players have chance to play for the Black Stars. It’s great motivation for everyone" Schaefer told the Ghana FA website.
Schaefer who has previously coached Cameroon & Jamaica confirmed his intention to attend Ghana Premier League matches to identify rising talents and boost morale.
He recently visited Hearts of Oak’s training ground ahead of their goalless draw with newcomers Hohoe United at the Accra Sports Stadium.
"I’ll be watching the games too. Most African players who play in Europe come from Ghana and we must be the heart of African football again" he added.
Since taking up his role in January, Schaefer has been tasked with offering technical guidance supporting football development and collaborating with the Technical Directorate to build long term strategic plan for the Ghana Football Association.
The 2025 /26 GPL continues this weekend with matches scheduled across the country on 13 & 14 September.
