Blackburn Rovers have experienced a slow start to the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

The East Lancashire outfit have experienced multiple highs and lows over the past few seasons, after missing out on play-off football due to goal difference in 2023.

Rovers couldn’t build on this form in the following season and instead escaped relegation by just three points. Sammie Szmodics netted 27 times in the second-tier for Blackburn that season, which arguably prevented them from suffering the drop to League One.

Fortunes improved at Ewood Park in the campaign after, as Rovers finished just two points shy of sixth place, losing out on the play-offs once more. Unfortunately for supporters of the historic club, it seems like the 2025/26 term may be one of the more negative ones for Blackburn. There have been some glaring issues obvious both on and off the pitch.

Football League World’s Blackburn Rovers fan pundit, Simon Middlehurst, has highlighted what he believes is the East Lancashire outfit’s biggest concern at this moment in time.

Blackburn Rovers believed to be suffering from lack of Championship-proven talent

"Our biggest concern on the pitch is the lack of Championship experience and the lack of quality," stated Simon. "We don't seem to have signed any players that have come in and hit the ground running.

"We've lost a lot of Championship experience and signed unproven players.

"If you look off the pitch, just the lack of financial support that we're getting from the owners. They keep adding little bits of money in to keep the club going but there doesn't seem to be anything else.

"There are obviously rumours of backroom riffs. It just doesn't seem like a really great place to be at present."

Blackburn Rovers are feeling the effects of a poor summer transfer window

Blackburn may be feeling somewhat of a hangover from their failed play-off bid last season, but a bigger explanation for their poor form is the dreadful summer of recruitment they had.

During the most recent transfer window, Rovers saw experienced operators such as Lewis Travis, Callum Brittain, Dom Hyam, Joe Rankin-Costello, Andreas Weimann and Danny Batth all join fellow Championship clubs.

This left a huge hole in their squad, depleting them of a massive amount of second-tier experience and strengthened other sides in the division simultaneously.

Only Sean McLoughlin and Taylor Gardner-Hickman were brought in from other Championship outfits, which has created an imbalance in Ismael’s ranks.
