The Lancashire club remain in danger following their 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday, and have not won since a 2-0 triumph over Millwall in December.

Valerien Ismael's side have been relatively busy in the transfer market, acquiring Eiran Cashin on loan from Brighton, and signing Mathias Jorgensen on a permanent deal from Bodo/Glimt.

Meanwhile, striker Makhtar Gueye left Blackburn in favour of Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.

Rovers have identified Barnsley winger Reyes Cleary as an asset who can help them stave off the threat of relegation from League One.

The South Yorkshire side have relegation worries of their own, as Saturday's 2-2 draw at Reading left them just four points clear of the third-tier drop zone.

As reported by Alan Nixon via Patreon, Rovers are back with a second bid to sign Cleary, but will have to go higher than their initial offer.

Nixon's post adds that the Championship side have offered up to £1.5 million plus add-ons for the 21-year-old, but Barnsley want closer to £5 million.

Bristol City could also enter the bidding at a higher number than Blackburn, with the League One outfit waiting to see how big the figure is.

The Robins may prioritise signing a new winger, having lost Anis Mehmeti to Championship rivals Ipswich Town, who acquired the 25-year-old to bolster their chances of an immediate Premier League return.

Bristol City should be able to beat Blackburn Rovers in Reyes Cleary race

Former West Brom man Cleary has proven his class for Barnsley this term, notching five goals and eight assists in 27 appearances across all competitions.

The winger also made a good account of himself when Conor Hourihane's men were beaten 4-1 by Premier League giants Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup.

It is no surprise, then, that two Championship clubs are interested in signing Cleary, who only moved to South Yorkshire from the Baggies last summer.

Meanwhile, Blackburn have shown some ambition in the January transfer market with the aforementioned signings of Cashin and Jorgensen.

However, Bristol City may be able to beat the Ewood Park outfit in the race for Cleary's services, with the Robins firmly in the hunt for a play-off spot while Rovers battle against relegation.

Saturday's 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday left Gerhard Struber's side just one point behind sixth-place Wrexham, who secured a dramatic 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers.

The Ashton Gate club's chances of landing a Championship play-off spot for a second consecutive season could tempt Cleary to move to the South West, rather than to Lancashire.

Furthermore, amid the Venky's continued ownership of Rovers, the Ewood Park side appear unlikely to outbid Bristol City to sign the talented winger.
