Three wins in their last five matches, including against fellow relegation battlers Blackburn and Oxford, have been just enough to lift the Blades out of the relegation zone.

Bookmakers have responded positively with their odds moving out as far as 14/1 to be relegated to Division 1 at the end of the season. They are now, according to odds on FIRST, less likely to be relegated than 15th place Wrexham and even QPR, who currently sit in 8th position.

Having lost last year’s Championship playoff final, many expected United to be pushing for promotion places again this year. But, rather than battling their way back to the summit, Chris Wilder’s men endured a difficult start to the season, losing their first six games and languishing at the bottom of the table.

Since beating fellow strugglers Oxford United 1-0 on 27 September, the team has turned their fortunes around. Although they lost to Southampton and Hull, they have since beaten Watford, which took them off the bottom of the table, and followed this up with a 3-1 away win against Blackburn last week.

The victory at Ewood Park came after going down 1-0 and moved them up to 21st place. Yuki Ohashi put the home team ahead after 40 minutes, bagging his first goal in seven games. However, parity was restored in the 54th minute when Djibril Soumare forced Axel Henriksson to steer the ball into his own net.

15 minutes later, Harrison Burrows ran in from the left and struck low past Balasz Toth.

Burrows was involved again when, in the second minute of stoppage time, he delivered a low cross, which was dispatched by Tyrese Campbell to bring the score to 3-1.

After the match, Wilder said: “I was disappointed to come in at half-time down in the game because I didn’t think there was a lot in it and I thought we had the better opportunities to hurt them but we didn’t and they took their chance.

“We got asked a question at half-time and it was no good feeling sorry for ourselves, we had to be brave and courageous and calm in our approach. We did that.

“I thought there was a real desire and drive from the players to get back into the game and go and win it which was really satisfying from my point of view.”

The result moved Sheffield United out of the bottom three for the first time this season. The quality of the squad, last season’s performances, and their recent form have seen the club’s relegation odds go out to 12/1 with most bookmakers. Rivals Sheffield Wednesday are favourites for relegation, at odds of 1/100 with Oxford (4/5), Blackburn (3/1), Derby (10/3), and Norwich (4/1) making up the rest of the five most likely teams to face the drop.

Despite collapsing in the second half against Preston North End to surrender a 2-1 lead to lose 3-2, the Blades still produced some moments of real quality, something they struggled with before October began.

Manager Wilder will be hoping to continue the gradual improvement when his team welcomes Derby County to Bramall Lane.

Derby currently sits 17th in the table, on 14 points, and four positions ahead of United. But, they have won their last two games, and Sheffield United go into the fixture as slight favourites due to home advantage. As things stand, the expected league table from Opta has the Blades in 12th, while the Rams are 21st.

After Derby, United entertain the current league leaders Coventry City, who are the only team to register 25+ goals in the Championship so far. QPR follows that fixture, before the Steel City derby at Hillsborough on 23 November.
