Enzo Barrenechea’s season has begun with a setback at Benfica, as he starts on the bench for the UEFA Europa League qualifier against St. Gallen.

According to Superdeporte, Marco Silva has opted for Manu Silva and Miguel Figueiredo, 17, who played for the B team last season, even with Leandro Barreiro injured.

The former Valencia midfielder seemed to have a fresh chance after the change from José Mourinho to Marco Silva, but this selection underlines how hard his route to minutes remains.

The St. Gallen tie looked a platform to regain ground and show he can be central to Silva’s plans, as in the first half of last season, yet he must keep working.

He started the window with an exit in play, but for now he is battling to reclaim his place with the Eagles, and unless a satisfactory offer arrives he remains in Silva’s plans.
