Boca have suffered a major setback after first-choice goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín sustained a cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee during the Copa Libertadores win over Barcelona of Ecuador.

According to Agencia Noticias Argentinas, the 38-year-old is to be operated on in the coming days by the club’s medical team, with recovery estimated at around eight months.

The injury struck after eight minutes at La Bombonera. Following a rebound on a slippery surface, Marchesín tried to readjust and his knee gave way, and he was carried off on a stretcher in tears.

Subsequent tests confirmed the feared diagnosis. The operation will be performed by Dr Jorge Batista, head of the club’s medical department and a specialist in such injuries.

The lengthy lay-off rules him out of the remainder of the Libertadores group phase and much of the domestic season, with a return only projected for pre-season 2027. Boca share their group with Universidad Católica de Chile, Cruzeiro of Brazil and Barcelona of Ecuador.

With the local transfer window closed, though exemptions apply for serious injuries, the club must decide whether to rely on Leandro Brey and Javier García or seek short-term reinforcement.
