Boca midfielder Rodrigo Battaglia has undergone successful surgery on a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in pre-season, and now faces at least six months out.

According to SuperDepor.com, the injury gives Boca a squad slot for a new signing, with 10 days to complete a third and final addition.

The Football Council are already assessing options, with 2026 bringing a return to the Copa Libertadores group stage, the club’s main priority.

The forward line has been depleted, so youngsters have featured in the opening rounds of the 2026 Apertura. Uruguay forward Miguel Merentiel, 29, has been sidelined for more than two weeks with a calf tear, is in less pain and has a good chance of returning to the squad for the fourth round away to Vélez on Sunday 8 February at 22:15.

There is also encouraging news for Milton Giménez, ruled out by pubalgia, as surgery is not required. He began a special treatment seven days ago and the medical staff will monitor his progress in what is a difficult injury to fully overcome.

The major doubt remains Edinson Cavani, who has lower back pain. Although there is hope he could rejoin the squad, the coaching staff are taking an extremely cautious, day by day approach to avoid rushing him and worsening the problem.
