Liverpool's bold €80m plan will transform this team. And maybe that's simply for the best.
Correio da Manha reports that Liverpool are accelerating their interest in Colombian striker Luis Suarez. The last one did work out, after all.
Suarez has an €80m release clause, though it’s thought that given he’s 28, clubs could talk Sporting CP down to around €60m after the World Cup. So we may be waiting a while on this one.
This is a particularly notable transfer, too. Liverpool have two elite strikers as it is, even if Alexander Isak hasn’t managed to make an impact this season because of fitness and injury issues.
He’ll be back soon, though, and the club certainly believe he’ll be a force next season. So why the interest in Suarez?
Well, it points to significant change at Anfield. There’s already a suggestion of that given both Isak and Hugo Ekitike were signed last season, a move that means two-up-top should really be the go-to.
And moving for Suarez doubles down on that - at a time when the club’s main winger departs. Liverpool never signed a replacement for Luis Diaz, after all, leaving them short on out-and-out wingers. Mohamed Salah also leaving would open the door incredibly wide to a change in system and one that doesn’t rely on wingers for output.
Having a third top striker makes that the sensible move. Liverpool could rotate their trio in a 4-4-2, presenting an incredible force going forward for the post-Salah era.
It would be a big change - Liverpool haven’t consistently used a 4-4-2 since Gerard Houllier was in charge - but an exciting one.
Current Performance and Impact
Luis Javier Suárez is enjoying a prolific debut season at Sporting CP after his €25 million move from Almería in July 2025. Tasked with replacing Viktor Gyökeres, the Colombian striker has been a revelation, netting 33 goals across all competitions as of late March 2026. His 24 league goals have kept Sporting in a tight title race with Porto and Benfica, while his 5 goals in the Champions League helped secure a quarter-final berth against Arsenal. His physical style and clinical finishing have made him the focal point of Rui Borges’ attack, establishing him as one of the most effective forwards in Europe this season.
Transfer Status and Future
The 28-year-old’s "statistical explosion" has made him a primary summer target for Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Newcastle United reportedly showing intense interest. Sporting is in a strong negotiating position as Suárez is under contract until 2030 with a release clause set at €80 million. While some reports suggest the club might listen to offers around €60 million, the hierarchy is currently focused on the domestic and European run-in. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Sporting may opt to wait until after the tournament to maximize his market value before sanctioning a move.
