Bolton Wanderers and Millwall have received a boost following a key update involving Johnny Kenny's future at Celtic

Transfer movements throughout the Championship are heading underway as the 2026/27 campaign edges ever closer, and it’s Millwall and freshly-promoted Bolton Wanderers who have just been handed the same boost in a new development.

Millwall will be striving to go one better next time out and finally achieve a historic first-ever promotion to the Premier League after missing out on a top two-finish before losing to Hull City in the play-off semi-finals,

The Lions have been busy so far this summer, though, and while star winger Femi Azeez could still be on his way out, adding the likes of Tairyk Arconte, Jenson Metcalfe and Mathis Servais to Alex Neil’s ranks will only serve to strengthen the club’s promotion ambitions.

As for Bolton Wanderers, a return to the Championship awaits following a seven-year absence and Steven Schumacher has wasted no time in bolstering his squad by making six signings to date - with wildcard French winger Kyliane Dong and highly-rated Liverpool academy graduate Luca Stephenson perhaps the most eye-catching.

The Trotters will desperately hope to fill the sizeable void left by Amario Cozier-Duberry, who inspired the club’s promotion push with nine goals and 10 assists, and although returning the winger to the University of Bolton through a second temporary agreement with parent club Brighton may just be out of reach, Schumacher also intends on bringing another loan winger back and those chances have just been handed a timely boost.

Bolton Wanderers and Millwall handed Johnny Kenny, Celtic transfer boost

The player in question is, of course, Johnny Kenny, with the striker’s services hotly-courted this summer following an impressive second-half of the previous campaign spent on loan with Bolton and Celtic’s subsequent stance on his future.

Kenny’s prospects at Parkhead have become clearer in a new update from Football Insider, which has revealed exactly what Celtic wish to do with the 23-year-old upon returning from helping Bolton achieve promotion out of League One.

It’s said that Celtic are willing to listen to permanent offers for Kenny, who will reportedly find it difficult to make his way back into the first-team frame under Michael O’Neill as the Bhoys bid to bolster their striking options ahead of next season.

This update has arrived after the emergence of admiration from Millwall and Bolton’s long-standing interest in striking a permanent deal, whereas further suitors south of the border are set to join the race in the coming days and weeks.

Kenny scored four goals from 15 league appearances during the first-half of the Scottish Premiership campaign before moving on loan to Bolton in January, where he flourished and played an instrumental role in helping the side secure a top-six finish.

The two-cap Republic of Ireland arrived in League One with impressive pedigree and showed why Bolton had pushed intensely for his signature by finding the back of the net on six occasions while supplying three assists in just 14 outings, with his successive five-match scoring steak in the term’s twilight proving integral to the Trotter’s final position of fifth.

Kenny would be absent throughout the play-offs with injury although Bolton were still able to go all the way, beating Bradford City across two legs before romping to a 4-1 victory over Stockport County at Wembley.

Bolton Wanderers have advantage over Millwall in Celtic, Johnny Kenny transfer race

Bolton naturally hold a significant advantage in the battle for Kenny due to how productive his time with the club was, and it would be no surprise if the Irishman elected to return to Schumacher’s side as opposed to signing for Millwall.

Of course, choosing The Den could offer a quicker route to Premier League football, but Neil’s striker stable is already well-stocked with Arconte, Josh Coburn and Mihailo Ivanovic, whereas Bolton’s forward line requires urgent work and Kenny would likely be a first-choice figure.

Sam Dalby is the only senior striking option for Bolton at this moment in time, and while they will surely be adding to that area of the pitch regardless of whether Kenny returns or not, heading back to Bolton would likely represent the smartest option for the talented forward as he looks to establish himself and launch his career away from Celtic.
