Chelsea Women have confirmed head coach Sonia Bompastor has signed a contract extension through to 2030.

Appointed in May 2024 following Emma Hayes departure to the United States national team, Bompastor inherited a squad steeped in success and immediately elevated it further.

Under her guidance, Chelsea powered to a sixth consecutive Women’s Super League title, completing an invincible domestic treble in the process.

The Blues went unbeaten in the league, winning 19 matches and drawing three, accumulating the highest points total in WSL history and becoming the first English women’s side since the 2000–01 season to complete a top-flight campaign without defeat.

It was a statement season that reinforced Chelsea’s position at the summit of the domestic game and eased concerns over the post Hayes transition.

This season, however, has presented a sterner test. Chelsea head into Sunday’s trip to Tottenham sitting third in the WSL table, 12 points behind leaders Manchester City, and come into the fixture on the back of consecutive league defeats.

A 2–0 defeat to Arsenal was followed by a heavy 5–1 defeat at City, marking Chelsea’s first back-to-back WSL losses in a decade and prompting scrutiny of Bompastor’s leadership from sections of the outside world.

Speaking after signing her new deal, Bompastor stressed her commitment to the project and her belief in what lies ahead.

“I want to thank the club for their unwavering support and the trust they have shown in me,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to lead this team and I could not be prouder to represent Chelsea.”

She added: “Our fans have made me feel at home since the day I arrived and I am grateful for the many special moments we have shared together so far.

We have so much left to fight for, we are competing on four fronts and we will give everything, every single day to make our supporters proud. My focus is firmly on bringing more success to this amazing club.”

Chelsea’s sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley echoed that sentiment, emphasising that recent results have not altered their assessment of Bompastor’s impact or importance.

“Since the day Sonia joined Chelsea, she has delivered a level of excellence that has elevated our women’s team on and off the pitch,” they said.

“Her impact has been immediate and significant, and the standards she sets embody exactly what we want this club to represent.”

They continued: “Sonia is not only a key part of driving our success today, but also an integral part of the long-term future we are building. Renewing her contract reflects our belief in her leadership, her vision, and the stability she brings to the club.

There is still a lot to play for this season as we continue to compete for all major trophies. We are very excited for Sonia and the team for the next phase both in the short and long term.”

By tying Bompastor down until 2030, Chelsea have effectively drawn a line under any short-term speculation and reinforced their commitment to sustained success rather than reactive change.
