Borussia Dortmund are in negotiations with Chelsea over the permanent transfer of Carney Chukwuemeka, reports Sky in Germany. The attacking midfielder spent last season on loan at Dortmund and is expected to leave Chelsea. According to Sky, “Chelsea are insisting on a permanent transfer,” rather than another loan, making this a defining moment in talks between the clubs.
Despite his limited appearances – ten Bundesliga outings and one goal against Freiburg – Chukwuemeka has impressed Dortmund enough that they want to make the deal permanent. His loan spell, though not prolific, gave him an opportunity to settle into the Bundesliga and showcased enough promise that interest remains high.
The fee remains the sticking point. Chelsea had reportedly valued the player at around €40 million, while Dortmund were not prepared to commit at that level initially. One more recent outlet suggests Chelsea may now be willing to accept closer to £22 million, which could be the breakthrough Dortmund need. If accurate, this shift could finally facilitate agreement.

A permanent move would benefit all parties. Chukwuemeka has made it clear that he “wants the move” after a successful loan and Dortmund have resumed direct talks. Chelsea may be facing squad constraints and Financial Fair Play pressures, which makes selling a fringe talent logical. Dortmund meanwhile retain a young creative option in midfield, building continuity in recruitment strategy.
This arrangement comes as part of broader activity between the two clubs. Jamie Gittens has moved to Chelsea from Dortmund in a deal reportedly worth around £52 million, showing the strength of relations between them. Dortmund’s sporting director has emphasised strong lines of communication remain open with Chelsea, adding confidence to negotiations.
From a Chelsea supporter’s perspective, this report provides cautious optimism. Carney Chukwuemeka spent half a season on loan at Dortmund and demonstrated glimpses of quality that justified interest. A permanent exit at around £22 million would represent prudent business by Chelsea. It frees up a squad slot and brings in funds at a time when compliance with Financial Fair Play is essential.
Many fans had hoped Chukwuemeka would break into the first team at Stamford Bridge, but with a congested midfield and competition from emerging signings, it appears his pathway was limited. The move to Dortmund offers him a platform to develop in a competitive European league. Brasileiro Kendry Páez, Estêvão, and Jamie Gittens are also joining the club, signalling that the midfield picture is evolving rapidly.
Supporters hope that reinvesting part of the fee in incoming talent will strengthen the squad. Ultimately, Chelsea’s decision to prioritise a sale rather than repeat a loan indicates a long-term vision: raising funds, trimming the squad, and backing players better suited to Enzo Maresca’s plan. For Chukwuemeka personally, this could be a blessing. Dortmund have shown patience and a willingness to develop him. If he clicks in Germany, both clubs emerge well-served – Dortmund get creativity, Chelsea enjoy financial and registration flexibility, and the player gains a clear career trajectory.
