Borussia Dortmund vs. Villarreal CF Champions League preview: Team news and predicted lineups

The month of November hasn’t exactly been kind to Borussia Dortmund who passed up a lead three times during last Saturday’s 3-3 draw with VfB Stuttgart. Deniz Undav struck late to negate what seemed to be a Karim Adeyemi winner.

Prior to the international break, the Westphalian club conceded late in injury time as Hamburger SV held them to a stalemate. The month initially started with an ego-bruising 4-1 defeat to Manchester City leaving them on 7 points in fourteenth place.

While defending and shutting opponents out has clearly been an issue in recent outings, at least BVB can take some solace in their attacking play against Stuttgart. At times, Niko Kovač’s side shifted into attack with a slick fluidity.

Now, they turn their attention back to the Champions League for what appears to be a must-win game against Villarreal. No doubt the Westfalenstadion will be rocking come kick-off at 21:00 CET with BVB in desperate need of an uptick in results.

The La Liga club are in fine form domestically with four wins in their last five fixtures. However, their European campaign is yet to ignite with a solitary point earned against Juventus (2-2) and defeats to Tottenham (1-0), Man City (2-0) and Pafos (1-0).

Villarreal will see it as the perfect time to take on Dortmund given their recent performances. If their top attacking threats in Alberto Moliero, Georges Mikautadze and Tani Oluwaseyi can click, anything is possible for Marcelino’s side.

Team news and predicted lineups:

Borussia Dortmund have a relatively clean bill of health for Tuesday night with only Niklas Süle (bruised toe) unlikely to make it. Maximilian Beier (muscle stiffness) is also a slight doubt after last Saturday's battle.

As for the visitors from eastern Spain, Pau Cabanes and Logan Costa (cruciate ligament tears) alongside Willy Kambwala (hamstring) are not expected back until 2026. Right-back Santiago Mourino (ankle) is also set to miss out.
