Sky Germany reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach have made an attempt to hijack Igor Matanovic’s move to SC Freiburg.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Croatian was close to moving from Eintracht Frankfurt to SC Freiburg for a fee of around €8m.

Gladbach have now attempted to hijack the move and have held positive talks with Matanovic over a move to Borussia Park. However, the proposal is only a loan, while Frankfurt prefer to sell the 22-year-old, which is why Freiburg are leading the way.

Matanovic returned from a successful loan at Karlsruher in the 2.Bundesliga last summer. While at the Wildparkstadion, the 22-year-old scored 14 and assisted five in 32 games.

Upon his return to Frankfurt, the striker was meant to be a backup role to Hugo Ekitiké and Omar Marmoush, but even after the Egyptian’s departure, Matanovic has failed to break into the Frankfurt team, even as an option off the bench.

At Gladbach, Matanovic would be the backup for Tim Kleindienst as the German will miss most of the first half of the season due to injury, so the 22-year-old will get plenty of playing time. While at Freiburg, he would likely replace Michael Gregoritsch, who has fallen out of favour under Julian Schuster.
