Sky Germany reports that Borussia Mönchengladbach right back Stefan Lainer is on the verge of transferring to RB Salzburg. The 32-year-old will head back to the club that Gladbach once purchased him from after six seasons in the Bundesliga. Lainer should return to his old stomping ground in time to participate in the coming Club World Cup.
Lainer managed to accrue regular playing time under several different head coaches during his time with the Fohlenelf. Marco Rose, Adi Hütter, and Daniel Farke all turned to him as a regular starter at one point during their tenures despite plenty of competition at his position.
Lainer famously displaced American Joe Scally during the second half of the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. The resilient Austrian international also returned to earn regular minutes after lymph node cancer sidelined him for the first half of the 2023/24 campaign.
Gladbach’s “comeback king” gets set to move back to his native country having made a total of 138 German top flight appearances. Lainer scored five goals in his six Bundesliga seasons. His last league tally came against Mainz on matchday 25 this past March.
Sky offers up no information on a transfer fee at this juncture. Gladbach paid €12.5m to acquire Lainer from Salzburg in July 2019. At present, he maintains an estimated €1.2m estimated market value.
