Sergej Barbarez has named Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 26 for the 2026 World Cup, with Schalke’s 40-year-old Edin Džeko confirmed as captain. According to BuLi News, it is the first full squad unveiled for the tournament.
Roger Milla remains the only outfield player to feature after turning 40, doing so in the USA in 1994. Džeko is set to join that group this summer, with Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, and Luka Modric, 40, also expected to be selected.
Džeko featured at Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 2014 debut, scoring one of four goals before a group stage exit. Vedad Ibišević struck their first World Cup goal in a 2-1 loss to Argentina, while Sead Kolašinac’s own goal after two minutes and six seconds remains the fastest.
Kolašinac, now 32 and at Atalanta, is included. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, 30, aims to add to 25 caps in a group with Canada, Qatar and Switzerland, though he could face relegation to 2. Bundesliga if St. Pauli fail to beat VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday.
The forward line features established Bundesliga strikers Ermedin Demirović and Haris Tabaković. The Hamburg-born forward has reached double figures in each of the last three seasons, while Tabaković matched his compatriot’s 12-goal mark, and the Borussia Mönchengladbach man equalised against Italy in the final play-off before Vasilj’s shootout heroics.
Bosnia and Herzegovina open against Canada in Toronto, then play Switzerland in Inglewood, before facing Qatar in Seattle. Argentina and Brazil have issued preliminary lists.
