FC Bayern do not accept the surprisingly harsh UEFA suspension for Luis Diaz and have officially announced an appeal.
This was confirmed by CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Max Eberl after the 6-2 win against Freiburg – both were clearly irritated by the decision of the association, which banned the Colombian for three Champions League games following his sending off against Paris Saint-Germain.
Dreesen explained: „We have requested the written reasons for the decision from UEFA in order to lodge an appeal. We will see if we can get the ban reduced. After an initial letter from UEFA, we assumed that it would only be one match. The three-match ban therefore surprised us just as much as everyone else; we didn’t expect it at all.“
Bayern’s top brass do not understand the harsh verdict. Dreesen continued: „It was of course a serious foul, but it was not an act of violence, nor was it directed at the referee, nor were there any other offences after the foul. In the past, only such incidents have led to a three-match ban. We believe that there should not be a three-match ban – but realistically, we have to say that such an appeal is only successful in rare cases.“
Sporting director Max Eberl was also surprised – and frustrated: „I’m not naive enough to believe that it will only be one game. If we can reduce it to two games, that would be fantastic. Three games is very tough in my opinion.“
As recently as Friday, Munich had firmly expected Diaz to miss just one game. Both Eberl and coach Vincent Kompany had said as much publicly – before UEFA’s announcement came as a shock. Kompany had already explained before the game against SC Freiburg how irritated he was by the verdict: „We all saw that moment and thought he deserved a one-match ban. But there were other opinions too. Of course we’re disappointed.“

The consequences are significant: Diaz would be missing against FC Arsenal, Sporting Lisbon and Union Saint-Gilloise in the worst-case scenario. Particularly bitter, because the winger is one of the most important attacking forces this season.
