Morocco eliminated Netherlands on penalties to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic Round of 16 clash in Monterrey. The match finished 1–1 after 120 minutes, with Cody Gakpo's 72nd-minute opener cancelled out by Issa Diop's 90+1' header before Morocco prevailed 3–2 in the shootout.

Yassine Bounou's crucial save from Crysencio Summerville proved decisive in a chaotic penalty shootout that saw four efforts hit the woodwork. Morocco will now face Canada in the last eight while Netherlands' tournament ends in familiar knockout heartbreak. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Netherlands v Morocco.

Winners

Yassine Bounou (Morocco)

Bounou delivered a match-winning performance that showcased exactly why he is regarded as one of the world's premier penalty stoppers. His save from Summerville in the shootout proved the decisive moment, reading the effort and getting a strong left hand to push the ball away and keep Morocco's hopes alive.

Throughout the 120 minutes, Bounou commanded his area with authority and dealt confidently with Netherlands' aerial threats from set pieces. At 44 minutes, he produced a vital intervention to palm Micky van de Ven's powerful long-range strike away for a corner, denying what would have been a stunning Dutch opener.

While he could not prevent Gakpo's well-placed finish, Bounou was blameless for the goal. His shootout heroics ultimately proved the difference after four penalties struck the woodwork, ensuring Morocco's passage to face Canada and continuing his remarkable tournament record from the knockout spot.

Issa Diop (Morocco)

Diop produced the most crucial intervention of the match at exactly the moment Morocco needed it most. Rising to meet Chemsdine Talbi's cross in the 91st minute, the centre-back powered a header past Verbruggen to force extra time and keep his nation's World Cup dream alive with the clock running down.

Earlier in the second half, Diop had received a yellow card for a foul on Brian Brobbey, but he responded with a commanding defensive display. He repeatedly thwarted Netherlands' attacking efforts, combining aerial authority with decisive interventions on the ground to frustrate the Dutch frontline throughout.

Diop's equaliser ultimately proved the goal that mattered most, transforming a match Morocco were losing into one they won on penalties. His combination of defensive resilience and attacking contribution at the vital moment encapsulated Morocco's refusal to accept defeat against a side that had controlled the scoreboard.

Loser

Quinten Timber (Netherlands)

Timber's missed penalty epitomised Netherlands' struggles from the spot as their World Cup ended in familiar fashion. His effort sailed wide of the left post, not troubling Bounou and shifting momentum back towards Morocco in a shootout that was already marked by wayward Dutch finishing.

Introduced at 86 minutes to replace Ryan Gravenberch and add midfield solidity, Timber could not prevent Morocco's equaliser that arrived just five minutes after his introduction. He was tasked with helping protect a 1–0 lead but watched as Diop headed home to force extra time.

While Timber contributed in extra time as Netherlands sought to regain control, his penalty miss was a crucial blow. With the shootout level after Achraf Hakimi also hit the post, Timber's poor strike meant Netherlands needed Summerville to convert, only for Bounou's save to seal their elimination.
