Brasiliense have signed 34-year-old forward Marcelo Cirino on a free for the Série D knockouts. According to Coluna Do Fla, the Distrito Federal club confirmed the former Flamengo player on 18 June.

Cirino scored three goals in 12 games for Série C side Amazonas this year. His contract there was terminated after fitness problems, allowing Brasililiense to bring him in without a fee.

He joined Flamengo in 2015 after his breakout in the 2013 Brasileirão and said at the time he hoped to become an idol, even if not on Zico’s level. During two seasons he produced 23 goals and two assists.

Flamengo then loaned him to Internacional and Al-Nasr in the United Arab Emirates. Neither club took up a purchase option, and in 2018 he returned to Athletico-PR, departing Rio with only the 2017 Campeonato Carioca title.

Brasiliense have also added centre-back David Braz, scorer of Flamengo’s title-winning goal in the 2009 Brasileirão. The club hope the pair of ex-rubro-negros can keep them in the competition.

They laboured through the group stage, while rivals Gama dominated the pool. Now Brasiliense look to improve in the play-offs, where six clubs earn promotion to Série C.
