Brazil have exited the 2026 World Cup after a 2-1 defeat by Norway in the last 16 on Sunday. Haaland scored both for the Norwegians, while Neymar Jr converted a late penalty that left no time for a response.

According to Nosso Palestra, the result keeps alive a long-standing quirk involving Palmeiras, as Brazil have never lifted a World Cup without at least one Palmeiras player in the squad.

From their first crown in 1958 through to the fifth title in 2002, every champion Brazil squad included Palmeiras representation.

The last triumph came 24 years ago, when goalkeeper Marcos was an undisputed starter under Luiz Felipe Scolari and a central figure in the success. Since then Brazil have not lifted the trophy.

In 2026 there was no current Palmeiras player in the group, though Danilo and Endrick are academy graduates and Weverton has built a notable career with the club.

The pattern therefore endures as another World Cup ends without the trophy returning home. The search for a sixth title goes on.
