NJ/NY Gotham FC is about to start the second half of the 2025 season after the NWSL paused for over a month. The ladies will start on the road against Chicago Stars FC and will play six total games. They will be a mix of regular season and CONCACAF W Champions Cup matches. As such, after not even playing a friendly in July, the Bats will be thrown right back into the craziness of the season.
After ending the first half on a strong note thanks to the wins over Utah Royals FC and Bay FC, the Bats currently sit in eighth place, which is the last playoff spot. It is vital that they are successful this month, especially since three of the four NWSL games will be at home.
So, let's take a look at Gotham FC's upcoming August schedule.
As mentioned, Gotham FC will begin the rest of the NWSL campaign against Chicago. The two previously met at Sports Illustrated Stadium and ended the game in a 0-0 draw. The Bats should have won, so now they will attempt to steal all three points on the road. The Stars are still struggling this season as well, for the side is in 13th place. Anything less than three points would be deemed a failure.
In 2024, the Washington Spirit had Gotham FC's number and won both regular-season games and beat them in the NWSL playoffs. So, when the Bats won in Washington, D.C. on the road back in April, it was an incredible win. They will try to do the same at home when the sides face each other again. Notably, the Spirit was missing multiple players, including Trinity Rodman. This time around, they should have more of the squad available, which could make this a more challenging battle.
When Gotham played the Houston Dash back in March, the game was probably the most boring one of the season. Neither team scored, but it was also during the Bats' slow start to the season. This time around, they must begin the game ready to attack right away. Sure, it will be nice to welcome Delanie Sheehan, Yazmeen Ryan, and Abby Smith back. But the NJ/NY side should remind them that they left the better team.
The Bats will begin their quest to defend the CONCACAF W Champions Cup championship when they take on C.F. Monterrey Femenil. Early on in the young season, the Liga MX Femenil side has won twice and lost once. Meanwhile, Gotham and Monterrey played one another in the last Champions Cup, drawing 0-0. One should expect both teams to try to beat one another. Plus, this will be a special game, for the match will take place at Icahn Stadium. It is an interesting decision, but it will take place nevertheless.
If there is one team that Gotham FC probably wishes they could play more against, then it is Utah Royals FC. Since Utah returned to the NWSL in 2024, the Bats have scored eight goals against the team, including three goals in the last match. The ladies have also won all three matches. The Royals continue to sit in last place, so, on paper, this is a game Gotham should dominate and win.
The Orlando Pride is not the same dominant team that won the NWSL Shield and NWSL Championship last year. Yet, the team is still great. They sit in second place and have already beaten Gotham FC in 2025. But the Bats beat them last year, handing the Florida side one of their two regular season losses. Therefore, the NJ/NY team can win, but they would have to do so on the road. They would also have to deal with star players like Barbra Banda and Marta. Still, one should not count Gotham out.
