Newcastle have announced that head coach Eddie Howe has stood down from his role with immediate effect.

The news comes as a big surprise, with the new season just weeks away from starting.

In a club statement, they announced that Howe informed the club of his intent to resign from his position, which was accepted.

Reports suggest that the former Bournemouth boss had grown frustrated by major player sales this summer including Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, with a potential departure for Bruno Guimarães ultimately seeing him decide to step down.

It brings an end to a very successful five-year spell in charge for Howe, who ended the Magpies' long wait for a major trophy with EFL Cup success in 2025 and also led them back to the Champions League on several ocasions.

He is set to be replaced by exciting young German coach Matthias Jaissle, who is currently in charge of Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia.
