Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after a coming together with goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky in their 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Sunday.
The Argentine centre back has been a constant presence in a dismal season for Spurs, not starting just one of their 23 Premier League matches this campaign in which they’ve sunk into the bottom three for the first time since January 2009.
As per Sky Sports Football, the north London club has announced that an injury sustained to his knee as a result of the collision – after Romero attempted to retrieve a loose ball and communications with Kinsky broke down.
The signs were visible immediately, as Romero appeared inconsolable and in tears while leaving the field at the Stadium of Light in the second half of a defeat that extended their winless run in 2026 stretching to as many as 14 matches.
It is the latest foul twist to a season Tottenham fans will already want to put behind them, yet will struggle to do so if one of the top flight’s most surprising relegations of all time comes to be in May.
Now under the command of former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, they will now attempt to beat the drop having suffered a mind-numbing 11th long term injury, or a period of absence lasting over a month, to a first team player – none other than their on-pitch leader, this time around.
He joins other notable absentees James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies, and Mohammed Kudus in the treatment room, arguably at the worst possible stage of their bid to maintain their Premier League status.
