Brendan Rodgers confirms brilliant Celtic rumour

There is still a decent bit of football left to be played this season but it appears that Celtic are already putting plans in place for the future. They have been linked with quite a few players in recent weeks, while there have been those who could be on their way out. It might be just as important to keep the core of their team together.

Celtic's best player right now is Daizen Maeda. He has scored 28 goals and provided 9 assists this season so far despite having playing most of it as a winger.

That kind of form has seen him being linked with a move away from Celtic Park. A reunion with Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur could be on the cards. And surely other top teams will have an eye on the Japanese forward as well.

For a long time, Maeda was celebrated for his ability to press the opposition for the entire 90 minutes. But now, he has added goals to his game as well and is the perfect modern-day striker in the eyes of many.

There has also been speculation about Celtic wanting to hand Maeda a contract extension. And Rodgers has confirmed his stance on the matter. As reported by BBC, the Northern Irishman said:

"Absolutely, if there is that possibility to do that."I've spoken with [majority shareholder] Dermot [Desmond] and the club and spoken with the player. Hopefully in the future that is something that can be done."

Of course, a lot will depend on Maeda and what he wants to do next. Surely, he will have no lack of potential suitors in the summer.

That being said, one would hope that he will look towards former teammates like Kyogo and Matt O'Riley. Both left Celtic but have struggled for playing time elsewhere. Can Maeda afford to risk the same so close to the 2026 World Cup? It might be more sensible to continue at Parkhead for the time being.
