Valencia are pushing to sign a centre-back quickly, yet midfield remains on the agenda. Approaches have been made for added muscle in the middle, with Besiktas’ Wilfred Ndidi and Brentford’s Frank Onyeka among the options.

The Herald reports that Brentford head coach Keith Andrews has acknowledged Onyeka’s limited minutes and said the situation will be monitored, adding he understands the 28-year-old’s desire to play more regularly. He also spoke of a wish to trim the squad, and that exits would be assessed for players unlikely to have a major role in the run-in.

Onyeka featured in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, where they were beaten on penalties by hosts Morocco.

Valencia are not alone in their interest, with Championship sides Birmingham City and Coventry City also linked with the midfielder.

Ndidi’s situation adds complexity. He sustained a left hamstring biceps femoris strain during Nigeria’s game against Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, has begun treatment and no recovery timeline has been given. It remains unclear how that might affect his short-term prospects and whether suitors will persist.
